High strength red threadlockers are considered a permanent solution to locking and sealing threaded fasteners. There are instances, however, where fastener removal is necessary. In these cases, red threadlocker removal is possible — and easy, in fact — if the right technique is employed.
Removal in minutes
One company with expertise in threadlocker application and removal is Henkel, makers of Loctite. Its Loctite 2620 Ultra High Temperature, High Strength Red Threadlocker is the ideal solution to lock and seal threaded fasteners in applications that require high strength and continuous temperature resistance up to 343 degrees C (650 degrees F). But when removal is required, the company has a simple approach that only takes minutes.
“Removing a red threadlocker involves heating the nut and bolt for a couple of minutes to a temperature of 500 degrees F (250 degrees C),” explains Mike Wase, Loctite adhesive specialist for Henkel Canada.
Applying localized heat using a blowtorch, for example, softens the thermoset plastic in the threadlocker. Once the nut and bolt are heated up, disassembly can be completed using a standard hand wrench, Wase says.
This simple removal method makes the Loctite 2620 red threadlocker a top choice for plant maintenance applications that require high strength locking and sealing, but may also require occasional removal for maintenance.
About Loctite 2620 Ultra High Temperature, High Strength Red Threadlocker
Loctite 2620 can be used to lock and seal fasteners up to 19 millimetres (¾ inches) in size. It will secure parts that need to withstand heavy shock, vibration, or extreme chemical or environmental conditions in plants.
If the job doesn’t require such a high strength threadlocker, Henkel offers a blue medium strength threadlocker, which can be removed with standard hand tools. A variety of different threadlockers in various strengths are also available from the company.
