Mississauga, Ontario, May 2014 – KSB has been contracted by Fort Hills Energy LP (consortium with Suncor Energy, Total E&P Canada and Teck Resources Ltd) to supply large RDLO water transport pumps for their mega mineable oil sands project estimated at $13.5 billion, located 90 km north of Fort McMurray, Alberta.
The order is for twelve pump sets which will be used in the oil sands mine’s process water recycling system. Current plans call for first oil from the project in 2017, with production ramping up to 180,000 barrels of liquefied bitumen per day.
The KSB RDLO pumps selected for the Fort Hills project are of a double-volute design and will be built to deliver flows between 4,250 cubic meters per hour and 6,125 cubic meters of water per hour, at heads of up to 128 metres. Four of these pumps will be rated for temperatures up to 95°C.
Pumps and motors will be mounted on American Petroleum Institute (API 610) standard baseplates. Full instrumentation, including temperature and vibration sensors, will be installed in Canada by KSB Pumps.
“This is a very important project for Suncor Energy and we are proud to be part of it”, says Mike Blundell, president of KSB Pumps Inc. “Winning this order in strong competition was a team effort involving sales and engineering staff here and in KSB’s headquarters in Germany.”
KSB’s commitment to the oil sands industry is underlined by the development of a major service centre, located on Fort McMurray and operated by KSB-subsidiary GIW Industries.
