A major manufacturer of plumbing fixtures had been using wheel carts to move greenware product throughout its production area prior to final firing and shipping. This was a slow and inefficient process and, due to the fact that workers were required to manually move and place the unfired porcelain pieces, it resulted in an unacceptable level of product damage, as well as repetitive strain injuries for the workers.
The company knew there had to be a better way — one that would reduce product damage, eliminate worker injuries, streamline the manufacturing process and improve productivity.
Norpak Handling had the solution.
The better way
Norpak Handling’s solution involved using a zoned accumulation conveyor to carry product from station to station throughout the assembly area. Then, a conveyorized smart car is used to transfer completed assemblies to a series of accumulation lines prior to entry into the kiln for final firing. All accumulation conveyors included in the system are Hytrol ABEZ style conveyors with adjustable zone length and programmable dwell at all workstations.
Implementing the Norpak Handling system resulted in a 60 per cent increase in production, and a dramatic decrease in product damage, resulting in almost total elimination of product re-work costs. In addition, thanks to the new system, incidences of task-related injuries are steadily decreasing.
