As a leading producer of pumps, valves and related systems, KSB regularly develops innovative and reliable pump solutions for the most challenging applications in industrial and utility power plants, water and wastewater facilities, and mining and industrial processes. Its newest development, a free app for smartphones and tablets, is no exception. A world first in this area, the new app has the capability to estimate the operating efficiency of a pump and indicate if there is any room for improvement, saving the user money in the process.
How it works
The user simply downloads the free app onto a smartphone or tablet, selects the pump type, and is then prompted to enter some basic information from the pump’s nameplate, such as pump type, rated head, rated capacity, motor power and normal operating speed. Then, the user must hold the device next to the motor while the app makes a 20 second recording of the pump in operation. The KSB Sonolyzer app uses the device’s built-in microphone to listen to the sound made by the motor fan. It uses an industry-first estimation algorithm developed by KSB to power the app and take readings.
A beneficial tool
By analyzing this recording, the app can determine the pump’s precise rotational speed and determine whether the pump is running within its optimal operating range. This information will help the pump’s owner decide if any changes to the pump or operating environment are required to improve energy efficiency and reduce maintenance costs.
The app complements KSB’s expertise. Further analysis by a KSB technician can identify areas for improvement, whether it’s impeller modifications or the installation of a variable frequency drive.
The Sonolyzer app is not just for owners of KSB pumps. It can also be used on rotating equipment produced by other manufacturers to assess the operating health of the equipment. The KSB Sonolyzer app is available at no charge for iOS or Android devices.
