Metal spinning is an effective and economical practice. General spun shapes range from ball, cap, trumpet, semi-elliptical, dished, domed, flanged and hemisphere utilizing materials such as CRS, SS, Alum, Copper and Brass.
Metal spinning is a metalworking process with low costs and high benefits compared to machining or deep drawing alternatives. The turnaround time of metal spinning is a cost-effective technique because of minimal costs of metal parts and the relatively short production time to create a metalworking product.
Factors such as selection of the type of metal material, metal thickness, ductility and size are important considerations at the start of the metal spinning process.
Conventional metal spinning
This traditional metalworking technique involves manual or CNC lathe turning of ductile metal at increased speeds to shape into a round, symmetrically formed metal product.
Series of passes (or turns of the lathe) thins the material with each rotation until the desired thickness, depth and diameter are attained.
Partially formed metal parts called ‘preforms’ are cylindrical, conical or shell-like shaped metal forms formed to assist in the production of multiple metal spun products, which helps to enhance the speed and efficiently of the overall process. Preforms themselves are also created using the metal spinning process.
Shear metal spinning
First time is a charm when it comes to shear metal spinning. Converse to conventional metal spinning, shear spinning applications take only one pass. Accuracy is even more vital since precise calculations are necessary to ensure correct metal thickness of the finished product.
Edge treatments are applied for a smooth, polished finish to the periphery of metal spun product. Treatments include beading (similar to circular spheres), curling (bended edges), hemming (folded borders) and trimming (straight edge rims). All treatment edges are created using a spinning lathe or a specialized machine.
