Milling machines play an important role in the Canadian manufacturing industry. They offer the benefits of highly accurate and efficient machining. They are also versatile, as different milling tools can be used for specific operations, and swapped out when needed.

Milling tools are used for cutting a variety of raw materials. They can also be used for a wide range of operations such as keyway cutting, die-sinking, planning and routing. With all of the different types of milling tools available, proper tool selection is essential.

Milling tool types

Milling tools are categorized based on their shape, size, coatings and rake angle. There is a large variety of milling tools in use in Canada to meet the diverse machining requirements for custom projects.

Some of the different types of milling tools include:

  • Fly cutters, a single body that can accept one or two tool bits placed inside. The cutters can be replaced when required.
  • Slot drills, a cutter type with the ability to drill into materials. They have two flutes and a cutter tooth at the centre of the end face.
  • Bell nose cutters, which are often used for creating three dimensional shapes. These cutters resemble a slot drill, but the end has a hemispherical shape.
  • Slab mill tools, ideal for working with materials with large, broad surfaces because they can offer quick machining.
  • Face mill tools, which have a tip made from ceramic or disposable carbide mounted on the cutter’s body.

A wide selection of milling tools is available from Rotem Industrial Products. They include many indexable milling cutters, solid carbide tools, as well as different grades, coatings and geometries. For more information, contact Rotem.
