Metal spinning — the spinning of a metal disk against a mandrill — is not a new metal forming process. Its origins stem from clay pottery making techniques developed in ancient Egypt. However, it’s a process still very relevant today in the manufacture of many parts and components.
Crown Custom Metal Spinning is a leader in this area. The Toronto-based company employs both hand and CNC spinning, though CNC is the primary method used.
Crown spins all types of parts and components for its customers. It manufactures — by way of spinning — a complete line of round cake pans, pots, pizza pans, etc., for both the commercial market and the home market. All of these items can be seen in the company's e-catalogue. Crown also makes lighting reflector parts to its customers' specifications, as well as component parts for OEM manufacturers of vacuums, appliances and many other items.
”We made a pot-shaped vessel for a customer to house electronic power control. We made 40-inch aluminum patio heater dishes used to reflect heat down. We made all the body components for a customer that makes an appliance for the beauty industry for melting wax,” explains David Vella, the company's president, when talking about some of its projects over the years. ”We make many small parts that are internal components for heaters, venting or whatever it is needed it for.
“Crown is famous for our spinning technique that virtually eliminates the surface lines,” Vella adds. “Customers have brought in small parts that have deep grooves. We would never let a part leave our factory looking like this. We put our best effort into every piece we make.”
The company's factory, based in Toronto, is set up to make large or small parts, in large or small quantities, with aluminum, steel, copper, brass and stainless. Tooling costs for small to medium parts range from $500 to $1,200. Setup and prototyping run at about $800, depending on material and complexity.
