Red-D-Arc helped a metal-fabrication firm with a large production order.

Red-D-Arc Welderentals has logged an impressive history of success stories, helping businesses everywhere find the perfect solutions for their applications. In one case, two years ago, Red-D-Arc helped a metal-fabrication company in Charlotte, NC increase its productivity significantly.

A quicker, more efficient process

In 2017, this company received an order for 300 small I.D. vessels for titanium moulds. Two employees were using FCAW and back gouging on the insides and outsides of these vessels for 100 per cent penetration. This process resulted in only two vessels produced per hour.

The company needed a quicker, more efficient process to fulfill this order. For a better solution, it turned to Red-D-Arc.

Following discussions with the Red-D-Arc team, the latter recommended a custom-designed turnkey submerged arc system. Submerged-arc welding can boost the efficiency and quality of industrial welding projects, no matter the size or complexity. This particular system came with a small I.D. sub arc welding head mounted on a nine-by-nine-foot manipulator, a flux recovery system, an NA5R automatic wire feeder, a DC600 multi-process welder, and five-ton turning rolls. Other features included a laser and camera, for precise control and monitoring of the welding process.

The customer elected to install this submerged arc system, and results were immediately apparent. The staff could now produce five cans per hour at half the labour cost – an increase in productivity of 250 per cent. In addition, the system improved the safety of the workplace in multiple ways. With the elimination of back gouging, there was less chance of fire, and welders no longer had to weld inside confined spaces. The turning rolls replaced manual rotation of vessels on tables, eliminating the risk of musculoskeletal injuries.
