AIRSKIN pressure-sensitive safety skin by Blue Danube Robotics, for use with UR products

Universal Robots (UR) revolutionizes industrial automation with its collaborative robot arms, or “cobots”, available from Canada’s leader in cobot technology, Advanced Motion & Controls Ltd. The UR10 model is a six-axis robot with a reach of 1.3 metres, capable of a payload of ten kilograms. Blue Danube Robotics has made UR10 cobots even easier to use with its AIRSKIN pressure-sensitive safety skin, for close human-robot collaboration in cramped workspaces.

Space, speed, and safety

With AIRSKIN, businesses get more productivity out of their UR10 cobots by allowing for a higher safe robot speed – as workers can start, stop, or position the robot arms with merely a touch of the hand or the arm. AIRSKIN is made of sturdy and durable material developed for industrial environments. Available for UR robots and end-of-arm tooling, it is an easy add-on safety solution that users can install quickly: six wires connect directly to the robot controller’s safety IOs.

Advanced Motion & Controls Ltd. recommends AIRSKIN for several common automation applications, such as screw driving, pick and place, packaging and palletizing, assembly, machine tending, and quality inspection. Three different modular solutions are available: E2W (elbow to wrist), 3W (wrist pads), and 2E (elbow pads).

AIRSKIN gives users major benefits in three distinct categories. First, it saves a lot of space, as a safety solution for cramped spaces, with no fence or laser scanner required. Second, it offers advantages in terms of speed, by increasing the safe speed of UR10 cobots and achieving up to 800 millimetres per second in collaborative applications. Finally, AIRSKIN offers serious safety benefits. It complies with the highest safety standards, including ISO 13849 (PLe), ISO/TS 15066, and IEC 62061 (SIL3). The autonomous pads are constantly running self-diagnosis, to ensure functional safety on the highest level, and risk assessment is quick and easy.
