RJ45 connectors

Boyce's Help Point communication devices have benefited substantially from HARTING technology.

All over the world, for decades, the HARTING Technology Group has found the right connectivity solutions for many industrial needs. This includes the needs of Canadian customers, through HARTING Canada. Not long ago, HARTING’s PushPull RJ45 connectors were the perfect solution for wireless communication panels in the New York City subway system. Here is just one example of how the company has solved important power-transmission issues.

Not a single failure

Thousands of Help Point two-way panels are installed on columns and walls inside New York subway stations for customer help. Riders can communicate with station booths and the transit system’s control centre for information or emergency assistance. Manufactured by Boyce Technologies, these devices use state-of-the-art technology – including HARTING’s line of PushPull connectors. Measuring less than 20 centimetres wide, each panel needs a connector slim enough to fit into the enclosure, but rugged enough to handle the demanding environment.

Boyce had previously used Han 3A connectors in transit-communications projects. But these connectors were a difficult fit, due to their external bail. For a better solution, Boyce switched to HARTING’s Variant 4 PushPull RJ45 connectors, which have internal locking mechanisms.

So Boyce swaged the cast RJ45 connectors into the custom chassis it had developed for the Motorola access point that provided dual-band Wi-Fi and VoIP. RJ45 cable assemblies, seven-pin Hybrids, ten-pin Signals, and other PushPull models are being used in different applications. Boyce manufactured different versions of Help Points, as different installations required different types of power, control, or data.

Boyce found that it could use PushPull connectors for every application that required them. The company found a use for every single Variant 4 and pin it used. Subway officials were surprised by how well these connectors withstood the challenges of the transit environment. To this day, not one of these HARTING connectors, assemblies, or pins has failed.
