A chemical plant in Canada was using a catalyst in its Fluid Catalytic Cracking (FCC) process to produce petroleum-based products. However, the existing expansion joint used in its manufacturing equipment was not designed to compensate for the excessive lateral movement of the application. This caused it to rip near the base of the flanges, exposing the expansion joint’s fabric reinforcement, which, once exposed, can lead to catastrophic failure. An expansion joint capable of standing up to this excessive lateral movement was needed — and it was needed fast.

The solution

Having a properly designed expansion joint will decrease the possibility of unnecessary shutdowns and potential safety concerns. Knowing this, the company turned to HOLZ Rubber Company, a manufacturer known for producing the highest quality expansion joints. HOLZ engineered and manufactured a triple arch expansion joint designed specifically for this application, eliminating the possibility of catastrophic failure in the process.

Availability

In Canada, HOLZ Rubber Company expansion joints are available through Northern Industrial Supply Co. (NISCO). The company can supply piping, flue duct, high temperature and metallic expansion joints, each designed to offer a reliable performance and a long service life in standard, maximum and ultra-high movement scenarios. Each expansion joint is designed to help customers gain efficiencies within their specific applications, and features fully moulded corners to eliminate corner failures and the need for costly gaskets or heavy ductwork.

For those customers not sure which expansion joint best meets their needs, NISCO has the expertise to help them determine the best solution for the application.
