HOLZ Rubber Company’s line of standard and custom expansion joints is available in Canada from Northern Industrial Supply Company (NISCO). The Pickering, Ont. distributor carries piping, flue-duct, high-temperature and metal expansion joints for all kinds of manufacturers and facilities.
While expansion joints are necessary solutions for a lot of equipment, they will work properly only when they have been installed correctly. This fact became obvious a few years ago, when a children’s hospital in southern California had a brief crisis with a water pipe. Fortunately, HOLZ was available to solve the problem.
A leaky situation
According to a Jan. 2014 case study from HOLZ, the hospital had a leaking hot-water pipeline. The leak was occurring at an expansion joint at the flange connection, and it was making hot water unavailable in certain parts of the hospital.
The staff contacted HOLZ, which sent a representative to evaluate the problem. It turned out to be simple: somebody had installed the expansion joint incorrectly. Whoever had installed the component had over-torqued the bolts used to connect the expansion joint to the pipe, and this had caused excessive compression of the flange of the joint. This extreme compression had led to the leak.
The HOLZ rep saved the day by ordering a new 320M expansion joint shipped to the hospital and recommending different torque settings for the new piece. After the 320M was installed, hot water began flowing normally everywhere at the hospital, and staff could once again give the best treatment they could to sick and injured children.
HOLZ’s expansion joints are designed and built to be of the highest quality and to have a longer life than joints from other manufacturers. With technical knowledge, industry experience and exemplary customer service, HOLZ makes expansion joints to withstand standard, maximum, and ultra-high movement scenarios; their fully molded corners eliminate corner failures and the need for costly gaskets or heavy ductwork.
