With 30 feet ”under the hook” and 70 tons of lifting capacity, custom fabricator Alps Welding can undertake some large projects and offer capabilities to its customers that other fabrication shops cannot.
For one recent project, the Woodbridge, Ont.-based company fabricated a pair of vessels, a heater and storage tank, which are designed to stack on top of each other vertically. The fit of the one vessel on top of the other is critical and very difficult to correct in the field. Thanks to the company’s 60,000-square-foot fabrication facility, the Alps team was able to safely do a comprehensive trial-fit of the vessels in their correct orientation. This was a key capability that allowed the company to ensure proper fit and alignment, and gave its customer an opportunity to witness this important test prior to clearing the vessels for shipment to the site.
Another recent project required Alps to manufacture a 200-foot tall stack in three sections, with the largest section weighing more than 108,000 pounds. Because of the size of the company’s facility, its crane capacity and its height under the crane hook, the team was able to trial fit all sections of the stack together, as well as all ladders and platforms, inside the building.
“We have developed our own methods for laser inspecting stacks to ensure overall straightness, and have our own preparation method to ensure ease of assembly and correct orientation when it is erected in the field,” the company says.
