Industrial Thermocouples include base (Types J, K, T, N, and E) and noble metal (Types R, S, and B) elements and assemblies. The elements are generally manufactured combining the thermo elements with various insulators. If protection from the environment is required, various configurations are available including protection incorporating ceramic or metal protection tubes, silicon carbide, metal ceramic, sialon, and cast iron including pipe and angled assemblies. Protection Tube materials include ceramic, metal, silicon carbide, metal ceramic, sialon, cast iron and Hexoloy.

Protection Tubes are used to protect sensors, usually thermocouples, against contaminating atmospheres and/or mechanical damage. Closed at one end, they usually incorporate some means by which the tube, sensor and connection head are assembled and mounted into the process. The Protection Tube material is selected on the basis of the environment to which the sensor assembly will be subjected. Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTDs) are used for industrial temperature measurements where high accuracy and long-term stability are required. The 100 ohm platinum element is the most common for industrial applications. The 3-wire lead configuration is used for industrial temperature measurements and provides adequate compensation for leadwire resistance. The 4-wire arrangement fully eliminates all leadwire effects and is used in applications where high accuracy is required.

T-PAK® thermocouples are mineral insulated, metal sheathed assemblies that are accurate and sensitive. The outer sheath of stainless steel or other alloys, coupled with tightly compacted magnesia (MgO), ensures relatively long life by protecting the thermocouple from oxidizing, reducing or other corrosive atmospheres.

Thermowells are principally used with Thermocouples, RTDs (Resistance Temperature Detectors) and Bimetal Thermometers in applications where it is necessary to measure temperature at high pressure (above 75 psig) or in hostile environments.

Thermowells are machined from solid barstock. Safe working pressures depend on the well material, operating temperature and the velocity of the flowing medium.

Tapered wells are used in many process applications and provide greater strength, faster response times and more resistance to vibration than straight wells. The taper provides a higher natural frequency which permits use at higher fluid velocities. The reduced tip on a straight well improves response time when it is used with a length sensitive sensor such as an RTD or Bimetal Thermometer.

Thermowells are more likely to fail from vibratory stress than from the effects of temperature and pressure.

ASME calculations can be used to determine if the selected thermowell dimensions are adequate to withstand the specified service conditions of temperature, pressure, velocity and vibration.
