New report highlights the need for companies to take a holistic approach towards their business continuity plans.

Deliberate or unintended breaches in technology are the main concerns for organizations today, according to recent findings from the Horizon Scan Report, a survey carried out by the Business Continuity Institute (BCI) in association with BSI (British Standards Institution).

The survey asked companies what they believed to be their top threats to business continuity. The results illustrate the need for companies to take a holistic approach towards their business continuity plans.

The top concerns

This year’s global top five threats to business continuity are: cyber attack; data breach; unplanned IT and telecom outages; security incident; and adverse weather.

It is also concerning that, according to the report, 14 per cent of respondents will experience business continuity budget cuts over the next year, making them less likely to be able to respond effectively to any of these threats. Another concern: Despite growing fears over the resilience of their organizations, the survey found a fall in the use of long-term trend analysis to assess and understand threats. Of those carrying out trend analysis, around a third of organizations (32 per cent) do not use the results to inform their business continuity management programs.

“While businesses acknowledge the threat from cyber attacks, we are concerned that they are not utilizing all the available information to identify and then fix gaps in their organizational resilience,” explains Anne-Marie Pizzitelli, head of communications at BSI Canada. “Business leaders need to look beyond the ability to survive, and seek to find ways to thrive in these very challenging times.”

Key takeaways

The key takeaway should be the opportunities that these challenges present, explains David Thorp, executive director at the Business Continuity Institute.

“As organizations venture into uncharted territory, now is the time to identify and undertake the measures that will increase resilience within your organization by ensuring that effective business continuity planning is in place,” he says.
