Bergen Cable can supply wire rope assemblies made from stainless steel or galvanized carbon steel.

Bergen Cable has been helping companies across the globe choose the correct wire rope and cable assemblies for more than 75 years. As the longest running wire rope and cable assembly company currently in business, it has developed the expertise to determine the appropriate number of strands and wires required to create an assembly that is best suited for each unique application. Another critical factor in the success of an assembly is the type of material used.

The options

Each application is presented with its own unique demands for strength, abrasion and corrosion resistance. These demands determine which material should be used — stainless steel or galvanized carbon steel.

Stainless steel is the most expensive option; however, it is the best choice if corrosion is a concern. Type 302 is the most common grade used because of its high strength and ability to resist corrosion. Types 304, 305, 316 and 321 are also frequently used in wire rope, each with their own advantages. For example, type 305 is ideal when non-magnetic properties are required; however, this option comes with a slight loss of strength.

Galvanized carbon steel, on the other hand, is a good option when corrosion resistance is not a concern, as it is less costly, but still offers high strength. Wires used in these wire ropes are individually coated with a layer of zinc, which offers some protection from corrosive elements.

Getting help

Selecting the right material plays a major role in whether the wire rope is able to transmit the forces, motion and energy required in the application. To ensure that its customers find the best solution, Bergen Cable’s website is rich with information about wire rope construction, tolerances, safety and more. The website also includes specific contact information when more information about sales, quality or engineering is required.
