ISO 14001 – Environmental Management Systems is designed to help companies grow without compromising resources for future generations.

The world’s first international environmental standard, ISO 14001 – Environmental Management Systems, has been helping thousands of organizations improve their environmental, sustainability and operational performance for more than 20 years. However, the standard was revised last year to address the change in environmental practices, maintain its relevance in today’s marketplace, and ensure that the management system is future proof. For those organizations that have yet to transition to the updated standard, BSI Group can help.

The revised standard

Companies have a responsibility to grow without compromising resources for future generations, and this international standard helps achieve this goal.

The new version of the standard is designed to raise the profile of environmental management in organizations. Some of the key changes include:

  • A new high level structure (HLS), with terms, definitions, headings and text common to all management system standards, allowing easy integration when implementing multiple management systems;
  • Increased emphasis on the role that top management has in ensuring the environmental management system is integrated into business processes and environmental performance;
  • Consideration of the risks the organization faces (for example, the price volatility of raw materials), as well as the opportunities these risks present (i.e., greater resource efficiency); and
  • Increased focus on helping businesses better understand their impact on the environment, as well as the impact that environmental concerns (such as climate change) have on them.

BSI’s role

BSI has official global accreditation status from the ANSI-ASQ National Accreditation Board (ANAB) for the new Environmental Management System Standard. This means that BSI can conduct audits to support the transition to the new standard, and accredited certification can be issued.

“We have invested heavily in making sure that we provide our clients with the best service possible to transition early to the new standard, so that they can start to see the benefits quickly,” explains Anne-Marie Pizzitelli, head of marketing and communications at BSI Canada. “ISO 14001:2015 raises the profile of environmental management to a new level so organizations should see numerous benefits, including better efficiencies and environmental performance, as well as helping them meet environmental requirements.”

BSI offers training courses, resources and services that can be customized to each business, regardless of where their starting point is, whether it is getting started, implementation, certification, or maintaining their ISO 14001 environmental management system.
