The Cable Route Tracer is capable of measuring cable depths.

The Cable Route Tracer from Megger is a lightweight instrument that can locate, trace and measure the depth of buried power cables. Among its many features, this instrument has a filtering circuit in the receiver that eliminates the problem of identifying cables in congested areas.

Tracer capabilities

This instrument has a compact control box attached to a swivel-mounted, precision-wound detecting coil. It can be operated in three basic positions: horizontal for the maximum deflection over the cable, vertical for a null over the cable, and at a 45-degree angle for a null at a horizontal distance from the cable equivalent to the cable depth. The instrument has two sensitivity ranges that allow tracing of cables up to 2.4 metres (eight feet) deep.

The fully transistorized amplifier on this instrument has 10-turn gain control, which provides a wide adjustment range. It can locate and trace cables energized with 50/60 Hertz. The Route Tracer will respond to current flowing in the cable, even if it’s in a metallic conduit.

Another feature of this tracer is that it is lightweight. At only 1.1 kilograms (2.5 pounds), it is comfortable to use for long periods.

Filtering circuit

The filtering circuit in the Route Tracer’s receiver will only respond to the existing electrical energy radiating from the buried cable. That means the receiver will not be affected by telephone lines, gas and water pipes, or steel reinforcing.

Applications

Using the Route Tracer, operators can easily follow main cable runs and service laterals using the meter on the control panel and/or the sound level in the earphones. In addition, the instrument can be used to pinpoint both Y-type and T-type splices and subsurface transformers. Lastly, it is sometimes used to find grounded electrical faults on un-shielded cable, especially in direct buried installations.
