Megger’s cable testing and diagnostic seminar will take place on May 24 in Toronto.

Megger, a leading provider of electric test equipment and measuring instruments for electrical power applications, is hosting a best practices seminar on the topic of cable testing and diagnostics in Toronto on May 24. Attendees will learn basic principles and helpful tips for critical cable testing techniques to ensure maximum uptime of the cable system.

The importance of cable testing

When network operators fail to maintain their distribution cable system, they may miss damages within the cables, resulting in an uncontrolled service breakdown. Testing is critical to avoid this.

For example, withstand testing performed following cable installation or repair can significantly reduce the failure rate during normal operation. In addition, during commissioning, testing with 0.1 Hz VLF (very low frequency), 50/60 Hz, DAC (damped alternating current) or resonance voltages can help detect major workmanship problems.

Megger recommends additional diagnostic testing like Partial Discharge (PD) diagnosis, Tan Delta or dielectric spectroscopy as a necessary step to ensure a full quality control of the power cable system. These can be performed after installation or to detect arising service interruptions.

Seminar agenda

This one-day seminar will cover key topics to help attendees get the most out of cable testing. These include:

  • Basic principles behind 0.1 Hz VLF testing, PD diagnosis and Tan Delta measurement;
  • How to save time during 0.1 Hz VLF withstand testing by using the 0.1 Hz VLF Cosine Rectangular voltage wave shape;
  • Combining cable tests with a monitored PD diagnosis with real-time weak spot location;
  • Pros and cons of each method and how to interpret test results according to IEEE 400.2 and 400.3; and
  • How to determine the reliability of existing service aged PILC and XLPE medium voltage cables.

Seminar details

Megger’s cable testing and diagnostic seminar will take place on May 24, between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm, at the Hilton Garden Inn Toronto/Markham. Space is limited, so Megger encourages those interested to register now
