A coal fired power plant replaced its HOLZ expansion joint after 26 years in service.

Expansion joints from HOLZ Rubber Company, available in Canada through Northern Industrial Supply Co. (NISCO), are known for their reliable service and long life. This, combined with the company’s product knowledge and application expertise, means customers can expect many years of service, even in harsh environments. For example, one customer, a coal fired power plant, replaced its HOLZ expansion joint after 26 years in service.

The application

A scrubber slurry piping system at a Wyoming coal fired power plant settled over the years, which caused a breach opening to lengthen approximately 1-¼ inches from the installed opening. This amount of additional opening caused the rubber to separate from the reinforcement ply on the outer cover of the expansion joint. During a preventative maintenance period, the plant’s team replaced the aged expansion joint with a new one before a failure occurred. The HOLZ team helped the customer by providing technical assistance and supplying the new high-quality expansion joints in place of the original expansion joint it supplied 26 years ago.

The distributor

In Canada, HOLZ Rubber Company expansion joints are available through NISCO. The lineup includes piping, flue duct, high temperature and metallic expansion joints, each designed to offer a reliable performance and a long service life in standard, maximum and ultra-high movement scenarios. Each expansion joint is designed to help customers gain efficiencies within their specific applications.

As a leading supplier of HVAC equipment in Canada, NISCO has the expertise to help customers determine which expansion joint best meets the needs of the application.
