ELS developed a pneumatic lift assist with manual pitching designed to grasp rolls of various diameters and multiple lengths.

A manufacturer of roofing materials was realigning its assembly lines to better utilize floor space, upgrade its production area and improve its processes. One of the processes it was addressing required rolls of roofing paper — of various sizes and lengths, weighing up to 75 pounds — to be manipulated from a core vertical position to a core horizontal position and placed onto a conveyor.

This process was previously done manually by a worker; however, ergonomic issues prompted the company to find a better solution. First, the company tried a solution involving a homemade core gripper that allowed for vertical to vertical transfer of a roll, which then manually tipped over onto the conveyor. This proved to be slow and awkward, plus it did not meet all of the application needs. Next, the company looked at using a scissor lift table with a dumping unit, but it required too much floor space. A floor-mounted manipulator was also discussed, but deemed too expensive and also used valuable floor space.

That’s when Engineered Lifting Systems & Equipment (ELS) came in. ELS was already involved in another aspect of the company’s facility improvement project. It was modifying a previously supplied workstation crane system to right size it for the work area and allow the remaining portion of the crane to be utilized elsewhere in the facility. When ELS saw the application, it recommended the company purchase a new Gorbel workstation jib crane with a custom-built lift assist for the roll handling application. This recommendation was accepted and ELS developed a pneumatic lift assist with manual pitching designed to grasp rolls of various diameters and multiple lengths.

Now the application has a floor efficient work area where a single operator can grasp hundreds of rolls per day without fear of lower back or repetitive strain injuries.

ELS has many examples of how its technical sales team has guided customers to the right solution. The company has 40-plus years of experience providing lifting solutions to a broad range of industries.
