REDwire Denso SeaShield jackets halt corrosion after concrete mortar protection fails

The SeaShield system is designed specifically to handle the demands of intertidal zones.

Denso SeaShield jackets were recently used to stop pipe corrosion in an application that proved too harsh for concrete mortar protection.

The challenge

This project involved an outfall pipe from a treated wastewater plant in the Isle of Man. The pipe is used to discharge foul effluent from a nearby treated wastewater plant. A 40-metre stretch of the pipe ran along a beach, where it was subject to erosion from sand and gravel. To protect this section of the pipe, a polyethylene coating was factory-applied to prevent corrosion, and a fibre cement mortar was added to prevent erosion. However, in July 2016 — five years after this installation — an inspection showed that the fibre cement had eroded in most areas, especially the intertidal zone.

A better solution

The company handling the project, Pipeline Protection (NE) Ltd., chose the SeaShield system to solve the problem. This system consists of Denso Paste, Marine Piling Tape and SeaShield HDPE jackets. The jackets are made of HD polyethylene sheeting, and provide excellent UV resistance.

The system was designed specifically for corrosion protection in splash and intertidal zones. It is ideal for environments with conditions that are too severe for paint, epoxies or other conventional methods of protection.

The result

Eighteen jackets were installed for this project. An inspection in October 2016 indicated that the SeaShield jackets had successfully stopped the erosion. In fact, a Pipeline Protection senior engineer said, “The SeaShield jackets still looked very good.”
