CSA's new guideline offers an in-depth and transparent system for the management of materials from their initial point of collection through to final disposal.

CSA Group has published the first edition of a new guideline aimed at helping organizations make more effective and informed decisions on end-of-life (EOL) management options for products and materials. CSA SPE-890 - A Guideline for Accountable Management of End-of-Life Materials, released in co-operation with the Ontario Waste Management Association (OWMA), offers an in-depth and transparent system for the management of EOL materials from their initial point of collection through to final disposal. The guidelines also describe a method to account for the flow of materials.

What is EOL management?

End-of-life management is an approach that looks at practical measures to reduce the amount of waste produced and new materials used. The idea is that products have a “primary” life, but that there is also value by reusing, repairing, recovering or recycling the products for further use. The ultimate goal is to achieve high resource efficiency, zero waste and zero emissions.

Moving towards a sustainable future

“CSA Group is proud to contribute to a more sustainable future with best practices that promote the reduction of waste,” says Gianluca Arcari, executive director, standards, and vice-president, CSA Group. “The new guideline allows organizations to move to a more circular economy where resources are reused to optimal potential, creating further value and helping the environment at the same time.”

This guideline is applicable to a range of EOL products and materials, including:

  • paper and packaging;
  • food waste;
  • leaf and yard waste;
  • textiles;
  • wood waste;
  • glass;
  • metals;
  • plastics;
  • and more

This guideline complements existing laws, standards and procurement policies to help ensure reliable and accurate measurement and reporting, and to promote the development of EOL processes that achieve the greatest benefits.
