Fein offers a core drilling system for metal in which machine, core bits and accessories are precisely matched to each other.

When precise drilling of holes is required in metalwork pieces, a core drilling system may be the answer. And if it is the answer, you likely have even more questions about how to properly operate and maintain the drills.

Fein Power Tool Company has compiled a list of frequently asked questions related to core drilling and — more importantly — the company has provided the answers.

How can I prevent the blades from overheating, becoming blunt or breaking loose when drilling?

Good lubrication is essential when drilling. Internal cooling via the core drill and a standard drill emulsion provide optimum results.

What do I need to change if the core drill is chattering or whistling on the material being drilled?

Check whether the core drill's blades are still sharp. The guides must be set to have no play on the machine. Carefully increase the feed force until the chattering decreases. Warning: Too much feed force may result in the tool lifting up.

What do I need to change if blades are breaking loose or the drill shaft is cracking?

Check whether the core drill's blades are still sharp. The guides must be set to have no play on the machine. Reduce the feed force.

What should I note when setting up the tool?

The surface on which the tool is placed must be clean and free of scale. The entire magnetic foot must sit on the material to be drilled. The material to be drilled must be at least 12-mm thick and magnetizable. If one or more of these requirements are not satisfied, the magnetic holding force is not guaranteed; may move the machine on the material to be drilled; and may break the blades or crack the drill shaft.

What should I do if the material isn't magnetizable or is thinner than 12 mm?

A vacuum plate and pump must be used.

Stay tuned for Part 2, where more questions will be answered.
