All Custom Gasket carries a variety of high-quality mechanical packings.

Compression packings are designed to seal fluids in valves, pumps and rotary equipment, and ensure that equipment operates efficiently all day long. All Custom Gasket carries a variety of high-quality mechanical packings, with specific styles suitable for varying pump pressures, sizes, temperatures, corrosive liquids and rotating speeds. The company's tough and economical packing products are used in military, pulp and paper, power generation, mining, petrochemical and other industrial applications. In addition to meeting military specs, FDA lubricants can be added for use in food processing applications.

When selecting the proper packing to use, it’s a good idea to have the following questions answered:

  • What is the PH value (Range: 0 to 14) and temperature (300 to 500 degrees F) of the media being exposed to the packing?
  • What is the velocity or speed (1,000 to 4,000 feet per minute) of the rotating shaft?
  • What is the pressure (150 to 4,500 psi) on the stuffing box? (If you don’t know, take 2/3 of the pump discharge pressure.)

These answers can lead you to the right packing for your application.

Compression packing can come in twisted, lattice, round or square braided construction, and can be manufactured from a wide range of materials to suit your specific need.

Common packing materials include:

Graphite: Graphite packings are ideal for applications involving high temperatures and chemicals. Featuring reduced spindle wear, these packings are available with a variety of handling and performance characteristics, including high conformability, as well as extrusion, chemical purity, temperature and oxidation resistance.

PTFE: Packings made from PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) are known for their chemical resistance, low coefficient of friction and ability to tolerate a wide temperature range. This flexibility makes them ideal for sealing strong solvents, corrosive chemicals and oxidizing media.

Carbon fibre: Varying carbon purity levels, along with the type of fibre, will improve resistance to temperature and chemicals. Carbon packing is excellent for the majority of industrial equipment, and is suitable for a wide range of chemicals.

Synthetic fibre: Packings made of synthetic fibres offer improved sealing capability. They can be comprised of a combination of:

  • acrylic yarn and PTFE;
  • acrylic yarn and graphite;
  • aramid fibre yarns;
  • selected glass fibre yarns and PTFE;
  • or selected glass fibre yarns and graphite.

When it comes to compression packings, there are many more options. These include flexible graphite with Inconel, carbon fibre and graphite, ramie yarn, flax yarn (marine applications), bushing material, metal, fibreglass, Kevlar and injectable packing.
