Preventive maintenance can limit the likelihood and severity of unplanned downtime.

When equipment fails in the manufacturing industry, it impacts production time, order fulfillment, workplace safety and, ultimately, the manufacturer’s bottom line. But equipment failure can be minimized — or avoided — if the appropriate preventative maintenance measures are taken.

Here are five examples of common MRO challenges, and what can be done through preventive maintenance to limit the likelihood and severity of unplanned downtime.

1. A loose threaded fastener

Often outside forces like vibration, torque, shock, fatigue failure, thermal expansion and contraction can cause bolts to loosen on equipment. In many cases, this can be corrected or prevented by applying a few drops of a Loctite threadlocker on the bolts. This will help maintain torque and clamp load, while still allowing for easy disassembly when needed.

2. Threaded fitting leaks

Fluid leaks caused by vibration and constant pressure changes can occur wherever there is air space between the threads, including drain plugs, oiler nipples or fittings. The Loctite line of thread sealant solutions can reduce or eliminate leaks because they form a protective barrier, preventing the penetration of moisture and oil.

3. Corrosion

Corrosion damage can’t always be repaired. Sometimes the only option is costly part or equipment replacement. Loctite coatings, such as the Nordbak Chemical Resistant Coating, can help prevent corrosion damage and protect equipment from harmful exposure to extreme weather and temperatures, as well as harsh chemicals.

4. Abrasion

When equipment is exposed to chemicals or subject to intense pressure, wear can occur. In a pump, for example, casings and impellers can wear as a result of abrasive slurries and solids, cavitation and chemical attack. Loctite Nordbak Brushable Ceramic is one of many solutions that can repair minor surface wear. For heavier surface wear, Nordbak Wearing Compound can rebuild worn areas and extend equipment life.

5. Alignment issues

Bolt misalignment, like thread loosening, is often the result of shock and vibration. Clamp load is lost when bolts are loose, which throws alignment out of configuration. Threadlockers are the answer. In this case, High Strength Threadlocker is applied to mounting bolts to secure them in place, maintain clamp load and prevent misalignment.

Henkel provides solutions for the biggest MRO challenges. Its Loctite brand features a complete line of high-performance adhesives, sealants and dispensing/curing systems.
